Tattoo After-care Procedure

Proper aftercare is essential to ensure your tattoo heals well and maintains its vibrant appearance. Follow these steps to care for your new tattoo:

  1. Leave the bandage on:

Keep the bandage (Dermaguard) on for 3 days after your tattoo. This helps protect it from bacteria and keeps it clean. Plasma and blood will build up within the bandage, please do not be alarmed as it is normal.

  2. Leave the cling wrap on
In certain cases, your artist will opt to use cling wrap instead of Dermaguard. Keep the wrap on for 2-3 hours and then remove it.

  3. Wash your hands:

Always wash your hands thoroughly before touching your tattoo.

  4. Gently clean the tattoo:

After removing the bandage, wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and mild, fragrance-free soap. Use your hands, not a washcloth or sponge, to avoid irritation.

  5. Pat dry:

Gently pat the tattoo dry with a clean paper towel or soft cloth. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing the area.

  6. Apply a thin layer of aftercare ointment:

Use a fragrance-free, tattoo-specific aftercare product or a mild, unscented lotion (e.g., Aquescream). Apply a thin layer and avoid over-moisturizing, which can cause the skin to suffocate.

  7. Keep it moisturized:

After the first few days, you can switch to a regular fragrance-free moisturizer to keep the tattoo hydrated. Moisturize 2-3 times daily until the tattoo is fully healed.

  8. Avoid soaking the tattoo:

Do not submerge your tattoo in water (e.g., baths, pools, hot tubs) until it is fully healed, usually 2-3 weeks.

  9. No scratching or picking:

It’s normal for the tattoo to itch and peel as it heals. Avoid scratching or picking at the tattoo to prevent scarring and loss of color.

  10. Protect from the sun:

Keep your tattoo out of direct sunlight for at least 4-6 weeks. Once healed, use sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) to prevent fading.

  11. Healing time:

Most tattoos take about 2-3 weeks to heal on the surface, but deeper layers can take 1-3 months. Continue to care for your tattoo until the skin is completely healed.

If you notice signs of infection (increased redness, swelling, pus, or severe pain), contact your tattoo artist or a healthcare professional immediately.

Remember: Always follow your tattoo artist’s specific aftercare instructions, as they may vary slightly depending on your skin type and the tattoo itself.
